We measure temperature
As well as being sensitive to strain, the Fibre Bragg Grating (FBG) sensor wavelength is also sensitive to temperature. The FBG sensor PhotonFirst uses can intrinsically be applied where the temperature change through changing material properties directly causes a wavelength shift. It can also be used as transduction element converting the output through a sensitive material assembly, which generates a temperature (or strain, pressure) change from the measurand.
In addition to discrete sensing using FBG sensors, in distributed sensing the whole fiber is used as a sensor. Utilizing several multiplexing mechanisms with FBG technology allows for dense sensor grids providing a quasi-distributed sensing capability. This distributed temperature monitoring capability proves of increasing interest for many applications across markets as the high-tech industry, medical, mobility, energy, etc.
